Mohamed Ali, known as “Darbaka,” was shot by the police officer “by mistake,” according to the Egyptian Interior Ministry.

“The policeman pulled out his gun to end the fight but a bullet came out by mistake, killing the taxi driver,” the ministry added.

Footage posted on social media showed hundreds of people outside the security directorate’s building chanting and shouting.

The incident comes amid mounting public anger over alleged police brutality.

Following the shooting, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi told the interior minister on Friday to make accountable any policeman who attacks citizens and to submit proposals to parliament.
